Echoes of The Arena

The times I dread leaving the house, often end up being the biggest turning points. On one of those occasions, I met the most brilliant woman who introduced me to a 2-day personal development and business summit. At the time, I had no clue what I'd be committing to, but I followed my gut anyway... and boy did she knoowww.

To say that the weekend ended up being a pivotal point in my life would be an understatement, because if right place at the right time had to be summed into a moment, this would be it for me.

Echoes of the Arena Final_edited.jpg

The central theme of this piece is grit–something I severly lacked whilst painting it.

In addition to the mountain of valuable information and insights I gained from the speakers and the wonderful people I got to connect with, my biggest takeaway was a newly found lens of introspection and clarity of my inner world. As an artist, I wanted to encapsulate that in a painting, as a tribute to resilience, grit, and staying true to one’s values despite varying circumstances. I call this one 'Echoes of the Arena'. It merges expressionist realism with symbolism.

In wanting to portray themes of stillness in ever-changing conditions, I found a powerful parallel in the sea holly, an exotic blue flower that thrives in the harshest conditions, thus symbolising strength, determination, authenticity and grace. Coincidentally, later realised that the same flowers grow around my mother's childhood home, which made the piece all the more poetic.

To capture the flower's essence and highlight harsh environmental shifts, I froze a single bloom in ice, and intuitively shifted its colours to portray a vibrant explosion, mimicking fire and glass. The intention is to portray the embodiment of untapped potential in a temporarily suppressive state, close to breaking free. The frozen vibrant petals also reflect fragility and adaptability in the way that we endure and evolve when faced with challenges, without compromising our core truths. Because even inside the freeze, there’s fire, colour, and life. The entire piece is set against a black backdrop to evoke depth, as a mirror of the inner arena that all modern day gladiators step into.
